Sidney Singer, who was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, founded Veterans of Washington Place Boulevard in 1996. His goal was to provide a place where veterans could recover from mental illness and services that could help them. His vision was to create a community for homeless Veterans with temporary housing and services to help them live self-sufficient lives. Over the course of 10 years, Mr. Singer worked tirelessly to raise $2.5 million in government and foundation grants to transform Veterans Place into an administrative building with 12 townhomes.
As a result of Singer's dedication to the cause, the community is now able to house up to 48 Veterans at one time. Currently, Veterans Place of Washington is the only single-room-occupancy housing center for homeless vets in the region.
