Sidney Singer, who was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, founded Veterans of Washington Place Boulevard in 1996. His goal was to provide a place where veterans could recover from mental illness and services that could help them. His vision was to create a community for homeless Veterans with temporary housing and services to help them live self-sufficient lives. Over the course of 10 years, Mr. Singer worked tirelessly to raise $2.5 million in government and foundation grants to transform Veterans Place into an administrative building with 12 townhomes.
As a result of Singer's dedication to the cause, the community is now able to house up to 48 Veterans at one time. Currently, Veterans Place of Washington is the only single-room-occupancy housing center for homeless vets in the region. At Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard, our dedicated mission is to put an end to homelessness among Pittsburgh Veterans. We strive to provide a safe and conducive environment that nurtures the development of essential skills required to tackle real-life challenges. Each year, we extend our services to over 300 Veterans with an impressive 78% placement rate within our transitional housing program.
Our ultimate goal is to improve the lives of Veterans by connecting them to the necessary tools that pave the way towards stable and fulfilling lives. To achieve this, we actively foster robust partnerships within our community, collaborating with diverse networks and pooling together valuable resources and expertise. The Veterans Resource Center is one of only fifteen of its kind in the country and the only drop-in service center for veterans in the Western Pennsylvania region. The Veterans Resource Center services veterans facing homelessness or at risk of homelessness providing them with essential resources such as transportation, food, clothing, laundry facilities, shower facilities, financial assistance, and individualized case management. Veterans are immediately linked with resources for housing. Veterans do not have to be VA eligible to receive services. Anyone who has served one day in uniform is eligible for our services, regardless of discharge.
The Low-Income Veterans and Families Program offers veterans and their families the ability to receive services to ensure their basic needs are being met to avoid homelessness, hunger, and financial crisis. Veterans Place strives to increase their household income and stability through individualized case management. Financial assistance is available to support veterans and their families in need.
Veterans Place offers this program specific to Female Veterans. Through the Female Veteran Program, veterans are assisted with navigating their unique and challenging barriers. Veterans Place offers financial assistance to female veterans in need facing homelessness due to domestic violence, mental/physical health barriers, or financial strain. Through the Female Veteran Program, Veterans Place also offers a Female Veteran Group providing a supportive community of female veterans to discuss their challenges and needs.
