Wood Stove Maintenance
What a year 2015 is turning out to be! If you reside anywhere in the Northeast and are an owner of a cost efficient wood stove you are probably patting yourself on the back. This year has been met with almost a constant stream of snow storms and frigid temperatures. To ensure your home continues to be heated well it is very important to properly maintain your wood stove.
Here at Ed's Woodshed we do recommend cleaning your wood stove before every use. Although you will find new EPA-certified stoves that are more efficient than previous models; the burning of fire will still result in ash and soot being left behind.
3 Quick Ways to Clean the Class of Your Wood Stove
1. Let it Cool off! - It is essential to let the wood stove cool all the way before proceeding with the cleaning process.
2. Glass Cleaner - You want to use a moist rag or newspaper to insert into the cooled off white ash. Next spread the ash paste over the class.
3. Get the Perfect Shine - Using a clean moist towel or rag wipe off the ash paste and get a nice polished shine.
Note: If you have coated glass chemical glass cleaners are not recommended. Also we highly suggest NOT using a scratch pad or harsh chemical solutions on the glass.
Prolonging the Life of Your Wood Stove
Be kind and use the right kind of wood in your stove. Producing a clean fire is vital for the safety of your family. We highly suggest primarily using hardwoods such as maple or oak. Using hardwoods will provide a more sustaining burn with minimal smoke. Ultimately, a wood stove should be smoke free. If the smoke is visible and the smell is potent immediately put out the fire and clean your stove.
Wood Burning Tips
1. Use seasoned wood that is thoroughly dry. Meaning it should have spent months in the outdoors, be
darker in complexion, have split ends and a hollow sound.
2. To maintain good airflow it is highly recommended you clear the ashes from your stove regularly.
3. Be wise and only open the door to your wood stove to add logs to the fire.
4. Keep a fire extinguisher in close proximity to your wood burning stove.
Following the tips above will help you keep a healthy wood burning stove and a well heated home.
