It’s About That Time Again
It’s time again. Time for fallen leaves, pumpkin lattes, brisk winds, and cool nights snuggled up on your couch under a blanket watching the flames in your fireplace dance and flicker. With a fireplace Pittsburgh winters don’t seem so bitter. But before you can enjoy your fireplace or wood-burning stove, you have to deal with the ashes, soot, and cinders that may still be lingering from last winter.
This time of year, before it gets too cold, is the best time to have a professional chimney sweep inspect your chimney and flue. It is imperative that the chimney is cleared of all leftover ashes, soot, and creosote from last year. A buildup of creosote can create a dangerous fuel that can ignite a chimney fire easily. You should also have your flue inspected at the same time.
There are also a number of things the average homeowner can do to prepare the fireplace for use during the winter months. First, assure that you have a properly fitting chimney cap to stop debris and animals from getting in to your chimney. Also make sure that your fireplace has an adequate draw and that the dampers on the flue open and close easily and smoothly. Remember to remove ash frequently.
In addition to inspecting to make sure that the fireplace is functioning properly, you should also have a professional inspect it structurally. The mortar and brinks in the chimney should be checked for cracks that can cause fires if not repaired.
One last thing that is important to remember when you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove is to inspect your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector. Test these devices and replace batteries as necessary to keep your home safe in the event of any fireplace malfunction.
Preparation for the winter months can be a bit of a chore but on those cold winter nights, when you are watching the fireplace Pittsburgh winters make so desirable, you will be glad you made the effort.
