Winter Moving Tips
Winter can be a great time to move. Because it is the off-season for moving companies, prices are often cheaper and it is easier to schedule trucks, moving crews, etc.
That being said, dealing with snow, ice and freezing temperatures can make an already stressful chore even harder.
But sometimes a move just can’t be delayed, so it’s important to take the following into account if you have to relocate during the winter months:
* Take extra caution with temperature-sensitive items. Particularly on moves where your belongings will be on a truck for several days, talk to a moving professional about your valuables and heirloom pieces. For example, old, thin china can be susceptible to cracking if exposed to ongoing cold temperatures or certain wood can be more prone to damage.
Most electronic devices such as televisions, computers, etc., can handle lower temperatures, but not extreme cold or condensation. Make sure your electronics are well packed or well wrapped in moving blankets to insulate them. When you arrive at your destination, allow your electronics a full day to acclimate to your room temperature before plugging them in.
* Build in extra time. Even the most reliable moving company can’t control a Nor’easter or ice storm. It’s important to make sure you build in a cushion on both sides of your move in the event of any unforeseen weather events.
*Stock up on salt or snow melt. Keeping the sidewalks clean is important at any time, but during a move is particularly important. Additionally keep your winter weather supplies handy, either carrying them with you in your personal vehicle, or ensuring that your snow shovels, ice melt and extra winter clothing are the last items on the truck, and the first to come off.
* Don’t turn off your utilities too soon. While it is tempting to shut off your utilities to save money, nothing can impact a closing like frozen pipes bursting. Also check and double check that your heat will be on when you arrive at your new home.
Moving during the winter can be challenging, but it is not impossible — particularly when you work with the right company. Keep in mind the tips above for a stress free, successful move.
