Moving Into a Home With an Older Fireplace
For centuries, people have relied on fireplaces and wood stoves for survival during the winter. If you are planning to move into a home that features an older fireplace, there are a few precautions that need to be taken. Here are some important fire safety tips provided by fireplace Pittsburgh experts.
Chimney inspection
Before even attempting to use an old fireplace, the entire chimney system will first need to be inspected. After doing a thorough examination, a professional chimney sweep will be able to determine if the chimney is in need of being cleaned or repaired. The chimney sweep will also give solid advice on how to properly maintain the fireplace.
Keep tree branches trimmed
Lengthy tree branches can pose a major safety risk. If there are any tree branches touching the roof, they need to be trimmed back accordingly. According to fireplace Pittsburgh experts, it is also a good idea to keep the roof clear of any leaves or pine needles.
Do not leave the fire unattended
A fireplace needs to be supervised at all times. If you plan on leaving home for any period of time, be sure to properly extinguish the fire before heading out. Although most fireplaces are designed to be safe, leaving the fire unattended is still very risky. Remember to keep the damper open for at least 24 hours after putting out a fire.
Avoid using flammable liquids to start a fire
In an effort to quickly start a fire, some homeowners choose to use highly flammable liquids such as gasoline. Unfortunately, this can cause a sudden explosion. The safest way to ignite a fire is by using wood kindling or a fire-starter log.
Keep combustible objects away
Items such as toys, clothing, magazines, and household decorations should be kept away from the fireplace area.
Functioning smoke detectors
A smoke detector should be installed on every level of the home. If the home already comes furnished with smoke detectors, replace all of the batteries with new ones. Fireplace Pittsburgh experts recommend installing a carbon monoxide detector as well. A fire extinguisher is yet another required safety device.
