Where the Mattress Myth “Sleep Tight†Originated
Ever heard the saying “sleep tight” at bedtime? We’ve all said it, and you might be surprised to hear that the phrase dates back to the 16th century.
Back then, beds were made from four posts of wood connected by beams. Ropes or strips of leather were stretched across the beams to hold whatever material served as the mattress. Each night before bedtime someone would need to tighten the ropes to secure its stability. The phrase “sleep tight” was born! Sleeping on a rope bed might sound fun to a child, but if they ever get the chance to try one, they’ll see how uncomfortable and archaic it is.
Is “Tight”or “Firm”Best?
Fortunately today’s mattress has come a long way since the archaic rope bed and we have a plethora of options available at the mattress store nearest you. Many people opt for a firm mattress, thinking it’s better for their back. But it’s not the only way to go.
You can’t assume firmer is better or that a softer mattress will do damage to your back and spine. While you should have proper support to balance the various pressure points you develop while sleeping, within the line of top quality, well-supported mattresses, you’ll see room for variation.
Personal Preference
Often it boils down to personal preference. While some people prefer the cloud-soft feeling of a plush or pillow top mattress, where they literally sink in, others need that firmness to fall asleep and wake up feeling good.
What you might not realize is how the engineering of the coils beneath that surface provide ideal support, as well as motion separation. This means you can enjoy the feeling of sinking into your bed while still being assured an uninterrupted night’s sleep when your partner moves and shifts on their side.
Is Plush and Pillow Top the perfect choice for you?
Take some time for a “test drive” at your local bed store. Pittsburgh offers locations throughout the city for your convenience. You might notice that the plush mattress adds a layer of cushioning and therefore is more forgiving. This softer comfort experience is popular. Also, the extra cushioning can absorb some of the movement of a sleeping partner. In fact, some people consider plush or pillow top style mattresses to strike the ideal balance between being firm yet soft.
You don’t have to Sleep Tight anymore!
Yes, the choice is yours! With all of the options available on the market today, the most important advice we have is for you to try them all. You might find you’re used to a firmer surface and that’s the one for you. Go with your initial reaction; don’t second guess.
And the next time you find yourself telling your child to “sleep tight,” remember how lucky we all are that rope beds are a thing of the past. We’ll save those for the history books.
