Tips for Hiring a Professional Mover
Tips for Hiring a Professional Mover
When hiring a mover, you want to get the most out of your money. No one wants a mover hold their items hostage as they let you know that they have incurred more charges and moving will not happen until those charges are paid. This has happened! It is important for you, the consumer, to do a few a simple things prior to hiring a professional mover. The movers at Debo Moving want you to have these simple guidelines so you can choose the best movers available to you, even if it is not us!
Always Do Your Research
Ask around to your family and friends for referrals for moving companies: word of mouth referrals are always the best! Look up your perspective company on the Better Business Bureau website and see how they are rated. Have they had complaints filed against it? If the company you are narrowing in on offers references, check those references! The more testimonials from customers, the better. Make sure the company is legit by visiting the company, seeing for yourself if they are on the up and up. Enter their DOT number into the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration SaferSys website. Make sure everything looks correct.
Get Estimates and Be Open About Your Belongings
When moving interstate, the weight, distance, packing, and other services are all considered for the price of the move. Get an estimate and get it in writing! Make sure you let your mover know how much they will be moving, if there are large items to move (a piano, for example) and if there are any special circumstances at your new home. For example, will it be a very small parking area? Or, will they have to park far away and walk a long distance? If so, these situations may incur additional charges. Be open and upfront about what is going to occur so the estimate will be correct.
Get Insurance
Unless you pay the moving company to pack your things, it is unlikely they will be liable for breakage of your things when they are on the road, due to improper packing. They will have insurance multiplied by the weight of the shipment, up to a certain amount, but it is best for you to purchase a form of mover’s insurance. There are different plans available for you to consider.
Read the Contract and Ask Questions About the Contract
Moving company scams occur often so it is important that you read and understand your contract. The moving company will issue you a Bill of Lading, a legal document that you should read and understand first, before you sign it. It will include what your minimum and maximum payments are, the name and address of the mover, the types of payment they accept, the pick-up time, and other details about the payment. After you sign the bill, you must pay what the bill says. Make sure you have a copy on hand when the movers arrive. Any contract you sign should not look questionable to you. If it does, do not sign it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or point something out. You do not want the company to hold your possessions hostage on the day of your move because of a problem in your contract.
Move Off-Season
Moving from October to April will cost you less than moving during the summer season. If you must move during the peak months of June-September, call ahead with plenty of notice. If you are choosing between moving companies, leave your estimates out for the companies to see when they come to your home to assess and give you their estimate. The competition may get you that better deal!
Stick to Your Delivery Date and Check Your Inventory List
Keeping your delivery date is huge because if you cannot, your stuff may end up in storage, another cost that you probably weren’t expecting. Think about the large items you must move, like a piano, that may cost extra. Expensive items like art could cost you a lot to take care of for one night as well. Once the movers move your things, make sure you check your inventory to what has been delivered. It may seem like a long, tedious process, but it is important that you do this. You want to make sure everything is in good condition as well, but since moving is so hectic, at the minimum, check to make sure all your things have been delivered.
