Moving Out of Storage
Just like any move, moving out of your storage unit requires some planning and preparation to make it easier and less stressful. Follow the tips below and make moving out of your storage unit a breeze.
Take Inventory
Before you secure a truck to haul away the items and/or boxes in your self-storage, it is a good idea to take inventory of what you have first. By taking inventory of what you have you will know how big of a truck (if renting one) or a trailer you will need to haul your stuff. A lot of times, especially if not visiting the unit in quite some time, people forget how much stuff that they have and will end up underprepared. If you are not prepared you may have to make several trips instead of just one. By being prepared and taking inventory you will save yourself valuable time when moving.
Give Notice
It is important to provide notice to your storage unit before you move. Check with the company that you are using to find out how much notice that they require. Typically companies require two weeks’ notice before the move.
Make Room
Before you haul your stuff to a new location, you will want to make sure that you have adequate room for all of the belongings that you have in storage. If you have just bought or rented a new home you may have other items that you have moved in, as well as a bit of chaos in your new space. Make sure there is adequate room for the stuff you are hauling from your storage unit.
Move It Out
On the day of your move, carefully collect all of your belongings and take a good look around to make sure that nothing is being left behind. Also, make sure you take everything with you, even if you decide that you are going to throw it away. The companies that store your belongings may charge you if you leave items and/or trash in the unit. They also typically do not donate or throw away items for you. So even if you plan to toss something, take it with you to avoid additional fees for disposal of abandoned property.
Clean It Up
Once you have moved all of your stuff and cleared any trash, sweep out the unit. Dust and dirt may have accumulated, as well as other miscellaneous debris. It is important to have the unit back to how it looked when you originally rented it. A quick sweep through should be sufficient and again will save you money in clean up fees that could be charged. Also, if you used your own lock, make sure you take it with you. You never want to leave your lock on the unit, even if it is unlocked. And most importantly you don’t want to lock the unit back up. You could be charge a lock removal fee if you do so.
