Helping Your Movers
Moving can be an exciting time full of possibility and promise, but moving can also be stressful. Transitions are challenging and during that time you want your move to be as seamless and stress free as possible. So what can you do to help alleviate your stress? There are many small details involved, and helping your movers will help you move with ease.
Prep
You can prep your home before the movers arrive in several ways. One way is to unplug any and all of your electronics before your movers arrive. If you have any electronics, like television sets and you are able to get help removing them from the wall brackets, do so before the movers arrive. Also if any pictures are hung on the walls remove them and set them aside as well. When the movers arrive they can wrap the artwork to protect it during the move. The same goes for mirrors and any other wall art. Items like these, and others, that cannot be boxed up, such as shelving units, coat hangers, furniture, etc. can be broken down and set aside. It is best to remove these items from the walls prior to not only speed up your move, but also to protect your belongings.
If you are moving during wet or snowy weather you may want to purchase plastic floor protectors for your carpet or hardwood floors. This will eliminate the need to clean up dirt and grim brought in from outside.
Pack
Pack your belongings in boxes prior to the movers arriving unless you are having them pack for you. If not, pack each room of the house together to make unpacking easier and faster. Purchase bubble wrap or use newspaper to cushion valuables like glass, porcelain, or any other breakable items. Fill all boxes, especially those that contain fragile items, as much as you can to reduce movement inside. Keep all the boxes stacked neatly in one corner of the room. This will make it easier for you and the movers to move around freely and reduce the chance for accidents.
Label
After you have packed each box, label it. Some choose to simply label based on the room of the house, such as kitchen, living room, etc. This is the best bet as the boxes can be placed in your new home in the appropriate room. You may choose to label further, by describing briefly what is in the box, such as dishes. If you write by hand use a large black marker so that the words are visible. Print clearly in order for the movers to be able to read. Labeling two sides and the top of the box is ideal so that it can be identified from multiple angles.
Step Aside
Once the movers arrive it is best to move out of the way and let them do their work while being available to answer any questions that may arise. If everything is prepared and packed, the movers should be able to quickly pack the truck and be ready to transport your belongings to your new home.
