5 Winter Moving Tips
The months of winter are cold and may not be ideal for moving, but you may find that moving during this time of year offers unique advantages. One advantage of moving in the winter is that it is a slow season for moving, unlike the summer months which are the prime season for moving and also for vacations, which means more people are on the road travelling.
To be best prepared and to avoid stress, plan your move several weeks or months ahead. This is especially important if you are planning a long distance move. There are several considerations to keep in mind when moving.
Hiring a moving company will help ease the stress of your move. Trained professionals can pack and ship your belongings to anywhere in the country. There is no need to make multiple trips or to haul your furniture and boxes on your own when you have a moving company to do it for you. Having a moving company transport your belongings will reduce the time you will need to spend out in the cold and also reduce your risk of injury.
Most people still participate in some form or fashion in their move even if they hire a moving company. From directing the movers, to preparing your walkways, to transporting precious cargo on your own, you will find yourself outside and braving the elements possibly more than expected. Keep up to date on the weather forecast in the area, to prepare yourself for a possible storm. With rain, snow and ice you will want to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of all involved in the move.
Dressing in layers is recommended, as even in the winter the temperature can fluctuate ten to twenty degrees. Also, even if you hire a moving company, you may still be outdoors for a portion of the time helping to direct the movers or transferring precious items from your vehicle.
If the weather calls for snow or ice, it is a good idea to prepare your new place by sprinkling ice melt on the sidewalks, porch and walkways. In addition, you can apply a self-stick plastic floor covering to high traffic areas to keep the dirt and grim from the outside from getting on your floors. You will also want to clear a path in the indoor walkways to make moving boxes and furniture in much easier.
