12 STEPS TO HIRING A MOVER
12 STEPS TO HIRING A MOVER
Finding a professional mover in Pittsburgh can seem like an impossible task. By doing a little research and shopping around, you will be able to judge movers for yourself, save a lot of money, and avoid scams! Here are 12 steps to help you through the process of picking your perfect mover!
Ask people you trust: friends, family, co-workers, for recommendations. Google professional movers near you. You are going to need to get an estimate in person so don’t trust an estimate from someone that hasn’t come to your home. Find a mover yourself; not through a company that offers to set you up with a service. Plenty of scams have been attached to those types of websites.
Once you have your recommendations, check out your professional movers online and see what you can find out. A quick Google search can reveal a lot! Also, you can check the Better Business Bureau site, email the American Moving and Storage Association to see if the company is a member, which means they have agreed to abide by their rules. Movingscams.com has a blacklist of companies with a history of consumer complaints, another website to look into.
Especially if you are moving inter-state, get a binding estimate, which will be a guaranteed price. If you are staying within state, you may not be able to get a binding estimate. This just means that you should expect to pay more than your estimate.
Make sure that you show the estimator everything that you are planning to move: stuff in the attic, basement, outside. If the foreman comes to your house for the job and says that you have a significant number of items than he is supposed to be moving according to the estimate, he can “challenge” the original estimate (before everything is loaded on the truck), but he cannot make you pay a higher amount. He can ultimately refuse to move you for the price agreed upon, even if it is a binding estimate. Make your estimator aware of any environmental conditions that may affect your move such as a long walk from the closest parking area, no elevator, curbside parking, etc.
Make sure it sates “written binding estimate” at the top, has the movers name, signature, and date on it, a list of your items, and the agreed upon price.
COLLECT ALL YOUR ESTIMATES IN ONE PLACE
Keep all your estimate in one bright folder that is easy to spot and hard to lose.
After you have all your estimates, compare the bids. Be wary of a company that is way too low and question why a company is too high. Call and ask if you have questions. Don’t be afraid to negotiate
