Keeping Your Acne Under Control
Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States today, affecting between 40 to 50 million Americans. Take a look at some of the statistics, courtesy of the American Academy of Dermatology:
• Acne is generally assumed to begin in puberty, but can occur at any life stage.
• An estimated 85 percent of the population suffers from acne at some point in their life.
• Over 40 percent of adolescents have acne conditions or scarring which require treatment from a skin care specialist at some point.
• In 2004, costs associated with acne treatment was estimated at over $2.2 billion.
Fortunately for many, scientific research has made significant progression in terms of acne treatment, creating many new types of acne treatment options. While a skin care specialist can help devise an acne treatment plan that meets the needs of the individual, there are a few natural lifestyle options that can help manage acne.
• Manage Your Liquid Intake
Sodas and sugary drinks are notorious for increasing acne. Water is always your best option, as it serves to eliminate the toxins in your body. The recommended intake according to the Institute of Medicine for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) per day, and 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) for women.
• Manage Your Diet
What you eat has an effect on your overall health, including your skin. Studies have shown that eating foods that are high in vitamin A and beta-carotene can increase your body’s resistance to bacteria, which can in turn improve your skin. Foods that are a rich source of these nutrients include carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, kale, and spinach. If you are experiencing acne as a result of glucose intolerance, avoiding foods that are high in sugar can help manage your acne - it is best to get the advice of a qualified skin care specialist to determine if this is the case.
• Manage Your Hair Care and Cosmetic Products
Many hair care and cosmetic products contain chemicals that, once coming into contact with your face, can clog pores and irritate the skin. During breakouts, avoid using foundation or powder, and, when possible, choose cosmetics that are oil-free, without added dyes or chemicals. If your hair is oily, it can add oil to your face, so keep long hair pulled back when possible if you are having acne issues.
• Avoid Touching Your Face
Touching your face or propping your cheek or chin on your hands will only serve to spread bacteria. Trying to pop or pick at existing pimples can lead to infection and scarring.
• Wash Your Pillowcases Regularly
It is recommended that your pillowcases should be washed at least once a week. As you are resting your head on your pillow night after night, everything that is rubbed onto your pillowcase will come in contact with your face every evening, exacerbating your acne.
While there are many “home remedies” for acne treatment, it is important to understand that what may work for one person may not work for another. Understanding the root cause and sticking to a skin care regimen is the best solution for acne treatment as well as long-term management.
