Fire Safety Lessons For Your Home
Fireplaces Pittsburgh and other heating appliances are the second-leading cause of home fires in the United States. The good news is that homeowners who take the necessary precautions do not need to live in fear of a possible fire. One of the ways that the National Fire Protection Association recommends preventing fires is by inspecting and cleaning your fireplace and chimney annually.
You can also gain confidence by learning from the mistakes of other people. Below are some of the fire new stories that made headlines in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and how you can prevent them from happening in your home:
No Chimney Cap
Early one Saturday morning a man noticed that his neighbor’s roof was on fire. He told his neighbors, and they were all able to safely escape from the home. However, the attic and the roof were a complete loss. The fire was investigated, and the investigators found that ember from the fire had flown out and caused the roof to catch on fire.
This fire could have been prevented if the homeowners would have used a chimney cap. A chimney cap is something that you place on the top of your chimney. It typically has a spark guard that keeps embers from escaping.
Hot Embers
It is extremely important for you to exercise extreme caution when you are handling ashes from the fireplaces Pittsburgh. You should put the ashes inside of a metal container, wet them and allow them to cool before you dispose of them. If ashes are not disposed of properly, then the results can be tragic.
During Christmas 2011, five people in Connecticut were killed in a house fire. The home was worth $1.7 million. Investigators determined that improper ember handling was the cause of the fire. One of the people in the home put the ashes inside of a paper bag and placed them in an outside trash area or mud room. Additionally, the family had smoke alarms in their home, but none of them worked. The investigators also found that the family tried to escape, but they were not able to get out of the home.
A similar incident occurred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Someone placed hot embers in the trashcan, and some of them fell on the porch. A fire started, but fortunately, everyone managed to escape. However, $100,000 worth of damage was done to the home.
Burning Yard Debris Near fireplaces Pittsburgh
It can be very dangerous to burn yard debris in fireplaces. A man in Kansas learned that lesson the hard way. He poured a bag of leaves inside of a fireplace, and a fire started quickly. Fortunately, the firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire.
