Ensuring Your Fireplace is Winter-Ready
The evenings are steadily growing colder in Pittsburgh, and, for those Pittsburgh residents with a fireplace, is likely to bring about fond evenings in front of a warm fire.
Once of the most important and often neglected aspects of owning a fireplace is maintaining it, particularly before the winter months when it will be used most. A wood fire leaves a coating on the sides of your chimney, a combination of soot, ashes and creosote that can thicken over time, creating a dangerous fuel that has the potential to cause a chimney fire. The Chimney Safety Institute of America has cited that a chimney fire can burn hot enough, up to 2000°F, destroying the metal lining, cracking brick, and spreading into an attic or roof.
In addition to cleaning your chimney’s flue for winter, it is also a good idea to have a professional chimney inspection. A trained chimney sweep will have the tools and the experience to assess a fireplace or wood burning stove’s overall performance, spot any potential issues, and determine how to operate it safely while getting the most out of it. Ideally, a chimney should be both cleaned and inspected at least once a year.
