Downsizing Your Home When you Move
If you have decided to downside, whether from a house to condo or otherwise, it is important to prepare. Downsizing can be difficult because parting with your belongings can be an emotional experience. So how do you downsize the right way?
Take Stock
The number one thing to do is to take stock of what you already have. You can usually easily glance around each room and find things that you can live without or can’t, for that matter. If it is not too daunting of a task, list out each item or at least larger items of value. This way you will have a better picture of what you have. Once you know what you have it will be easier to decide what to do with it.
Trash
Separating, whether physically or on paper, your things into four categories after you take stock is a great way to tackle the overwhelming task of downsizing your home. First and foremost, if you have items that are broken or stained, such as an old appliance or clothing, toss them. Anything that you don’t want, couldn’t sell, or isn’t worth donating, needs to be tossed. You’d be amazed at how much you will find if you take inventory of your stuff. Broken laundry baskets, old dried up paint, flimsy broken furniture, this are all examples of what can be trashed.
Donate
When it comes to donating, you may want to ask your family and friends first before dragging your stuff to the local thrift store. People love free stuff and as a bonus you won’t have to haul the stuff yourself. Place sticky notes on the items that you are donating, let people know that you are having an open house of sorts, and let them peruse your stuff. You may not get a tax write-off, but you will get a sense of satisfaction by donating to those you care about most.
Sell
If you want to earn some extra cash, host a garage sale in your neighborhood. This will take some preparation and some work on your part, but you’d be surprised on how much you can earn. The proceeds could even help pay for your moving costs.
Keep
Look at the floor plan of your new space and decide what you could keep, especially when it comes to furniture. If your sofa or bedroom set isn’t going to fit, then there would be no sense in keeping it. Oftentimes people do not do their due diligence and measure their furniture before a move. Just ask anyone who has ever worked for a moving company. It happens all the time! Now that you’ve done all of this work it is time to move.
