Sometimes a move is inevitable. Maybe you’re starting a new job or relocating to be closer to family. ... Read More
After Moving To-do’s
Once you have finally moved all of your belongings into your new home, what do you do next? Unfortunately, after a move there is still much that has to be done, such as unpacking and organizing your new home, as well as getting acclimated to your new surroundings.
Change the Locks
If you are moving into a new home, the first thing that you should do is change the locks. If you are moving into an apartment, then the complex should have changed the locks for you. Make copies of your new keys for each member of your family and a spare key for emergencies.
Stock Up on Essentials
Stock your house with essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels, and pantry basics. It is important to have these items on hand since it is likely most of these items were disposed of during the move, especially refrigerated items. Having these necessities on hand will provide added convenience when unpacking and organizing your home.
Update Personal Records
It is important to update your personal records with your new address. If you already have utility accounts from your previous address, then you can transfer your account over to your new address. Keep in mind that if you open a new utility account some companies will require a credit check and possibly a deposit.
Utilities: contact the utility companies including water, sewer, cable, electric, gas, and trash to update your name and address.
Address Change:
Also change your address for the following:
Paint Your Walls
Before you unpack, paint. A common mistake that many make is deciding to paint their walls after unpacking and arranging furniture. If you can paint before moving your stuff in, especially furniture then do so. You will have plenty of space to move around and won’t have to worry about damaging any of your things. Once the paint has dried you can then move your furniture and unpack and organize your home.
Clean the Kitchen and Bathrooms
Before you get too settled in it is recommended to clean your kitchen prior to use and storage. Even if you were advised that the kitchen was cleaned prior, it is still a good idea to go over everything again. Clean the inside of the cabinets and drawers, as well as the appliances such as the microwave, oven and refrigerator. In addition, wipe down the bathtub, sinks and toilets in your bathrooms before use with a disinfecting wipe and follow up with a disinfectant spray.
Unpack and Organize
Finally, unpack and organize your belongings. If you labeled your boxes based on the room that they go in, then unpacking will be even easier. Unpack the items that you will be storing in the closets first, such as clothes, shoes or any other items that are routinely stored, then move on to the main areas of the home. Fill dressers, drawers, and cabinets first before unpacking any decorations or wall art. Once everything is placed where it should be, then it will be easier to decorate.
Explore and Assess
Explore your new place and also make sure you know where important places are located such as your main water shutoff valve and your electrical panel. Label the breakers on the electrical panel correctly if they are not already labelled. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher as well near the kitchen and even in the laundry room and garage. Check all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors by using the test feature to make sure they are working properly.
